SPF Decoded: Your Complete Guide to Sun Protection
From SPF numbers to broad-spectrum claims, sunscreen labels can be confusing. Here is a straightforward guide to choosing and using the right protection.

Sunscreen is the most important product in any skincare routine, yet most people do not use it correctly. Let us decode the labels and set you up for proper protection.
What SPF Numbers Really Mean
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures protection against UVB rays. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%. No sunscreen blocks 100%. The difference between SPF 30 and SPF 100 is marginal.
Chemical vs. Mineral Sunscreen
Chemical sunscreens (avobenzone, oxybenzone) absorb UV rays and convert them to heat. They tend to be more cosmetically elegant but may irritate sensitive skin.
Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) sit on top of skin and physically deflect UV rays. They are generally better for sensitive skin but can leave a white cast, especially on darker skin tones.
How Much to Apply
Most people apply only 25-50% of the recommended amount. You need about 1/4 teaspoon for your face and a shot glass worth for your body. Reapply every 2 hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating.
Common Sunscreen Mistakes
- Only applying on sunny days (UV penetrates clouds)
- Skipping the neck, ears, and hands
- Relying on makeup with SPF as your only protection
- Not reapplying throughout the day
